Survey Work
Memorial Grove Art/Sign
On December 8, 2015, local artist, Chris King, finished the installation of the Memorial Grove recognition mosaic. King was commissioned to create this piece in memory of the loved listed on it. Donors sponsored the art work and the twelve oak trees that will be planted adjacent to it. The trees will be planted in January, 2016.
The donors are: Leanne & Jim Harvey, Nancy & Cliff Ruzicka, Gary & Linda Cambria, Carole & Alexander McGeoch, Jim & Alice Holmes, Linda S. Everson, Jack & Rebecca Southwick, Keeling-Barnes Family Foundation, Susie LaPointe, Carol Thorn and Jim & Carol Davork.
The Grove will be completed with a bench donated by the Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Club.
Jim and his Tractor
Once again Jim Holmes brought out his tractor for a day of volunteering. This time it was with his flail mower attached. He mowed both the East and West banks of the Jane Barnes Field as well as areas to the South that the Committee’s equipment cannot do.
This is a huge improvement to how the park looks and allows spectators to sit on the slope to watch games.
New Bench
The Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club donated a comfortable concrete bench to the park. It arrived today and resides in its temporary home at the baseball field. It will be moved to the Memorial Grove when that area is ready.
City Council Action
The Lakeport City Council approved a lease with the Committee for the vacant home located in the undeveloped portion of the park. This action was taken at it’s regular meeting on January 20, 2015. The WCP Committee with take action on the lease at its next meeting on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. The goal is to allow the Committee to provide a residence for a caretaker. The caretaker would provide oversight of the entire park as well as perform some maintenance.
Caretaker Home
On Tuesday, January 20, 2015 the Lakeport City Council will consider a lease agreement with the Westside Community Park Committee for the residence in the undeveloped area of the park. This lease will allow the Committee to provide a caretaker to oversee all of the park grounds and perform some of the maintenance work currently completed by volunteers. The City Council meets at 6:00 PM at the City Hall.
Drinking Fountains 2
The installation of the two drinking fountains is complete. The Committee thanks Clear Lake Redi Mix for donating the concrete, David Lowrie for the concrete work and Jim Holmes and his tractor for coming out to dig the footings and again to groom the area when the concrete was completed.
Summer Weed Control
Even though Lake County had little rain we still had weeds at the park. Thanks to our weed mowers, Bob Rumfelt and Jerry Antoni. They have been volunteering for this for several years.
New to weed control is Keith Faller. Keith has a tractor with a flail mower. He brought that out and did areas too difficult for our mowers. Keith has offered to bring his tractor out for other jobs as needed.
Drinking Fountains
The two drinking fountains that have been in storage since the winter are closer to their new home on the Jane Barnes Field thanks to two of our volunteers. Jim Holmes brought out his backhoe to excavate the footings and drain sumps. He then filled them with rock and backfilled with soil.
Dave Lawrie put his concrete skills to work building forms and pouring the concrete.
Dennis Rollins has handled the rough plumbing work.
The concrete was donated (as in the past) by Rick Thorn of Clear Lake Redimix.
It will be early July before the installation is complete since the installer will be out of town until then.
Phase 2 Ribbon Cutting
The Committee recently completed installation of the sign dedicating Phase 2 in the memory of Jane Barnes. The Committee in conjunction with the Lake County Chamber of Commerce will have a Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Refreshments will be provided. The public is invited to attend.
